1958
According to Playhouse producer, Mike Ellis, attendance during the 1958 season was the poorest it had been since his start in 1954. It was the first season at the Playhouse where each show ran for two weeks.
The season opened with a comedy entitled Visit To A Small Planet by Gore Vidal. It starred Reginald Gardiner (left). Mr. Gardner had first appeared at the Playhouse in 1952 in the final show of that season, An Evening With Beatrice Lillie. Also in the cast of Visit To A Small Planet were Paul Lynde and Sara Seegar. Morris
It was considered quite a coup for a summer theatre to cast actors Chester Morris and Signe Hasso in 1958. The two were considered to be the toast of Broadway. The play A Frenzy Of Peace and Quiet was written by local playwright John D. Hess. The plot was set against the background of a summer theatre (a.k.a. The Bucks County Playhouse) and tells of a man who gives up the hectic business of producing plays in New York to seek the peace and quiet of producing in the country. The play even dealt with a flood much like that which was experienced at Bucks during the great flood of 1955.
